About Us
History of MBC
The Metro Bicycle Coalition emerged during 2003 as bicyclists joined together to form a credible public voice. The group focused its efforts around the transportation element of the City of New Orleans Master Plan which included a proposed bicycle route network. Early on the group was energized by its success in securing $4 million in Mayor Nagin’s 2004 Bond Issue. MBC has consistently worked to help public officials recognize the need and public support for making New Orleans safe for cycling.
MBC began regular meeting within a year following Hurricane Katrina. Soon after MBC was incorporated as a Louisiana non-profit. Successes include the distribution of over 1,000 bicycle safety kits, hosting the National Conference of State Legislatures National Bike Ride in 2008, and most recently hosting the May 2009 bicycle second line. As bicycle advocacy has grown and improvements have been made, New Orleans has gained recognition. The city received an honorable mention from the League of American Cyclists in 2008.
As MBC moves forward we will continue to pursue our mission to improve commuting and recreational cycling conditions in and around New Orleans.
